Most visitors come to Bogotá for the museums, the food, and the colonial streets. Very few discover that this city of eight million people is also home to one of the most surprising networks of green spaces in Latin America — a botanical garden, ancient urban wetlands, vast parks, and neighborhoods that have quietly chosen to live differently.
Escaping the Concrete is a private, vehicle-based nature tour designed for travelers who want to see the city from the inside out. No monuments, no tour buses, no crowds. Just Bogotá's green soul, explored at your own pace with a guide who knows every bird, every plant, and every story behind the spaces we visit. We recommend starting no later than 8:00 AM — the wetland is at its best in the early morning, when bird activity peaks and the city hasn't fully woken up yet.
This is also a tour with a conscience. At the wetland, we make a donation to the Bogotá Wetland Network — because ecosystems this fragile deserve more than just admiration. By joining this experience, you are not just a visitor. You are part of the solution.

Hotel Pick Up

We collect you at your hotel if you are staying in La Candelaria, or at an agreed downtown meeting point. Comfortable shoes and a light jacket are all you need — we handle everything else.

Jardín Botánico José Celestino Mutis — Colombia in One Garden

Named after the 18th-century botanist who spent decades cataloguing Colombia's extraordinary biodiversity, the Botanical Garden is home to over 4,500 plant species representing every major Colombian ecosystem — cloud forest, Amazon, dry forest, páramo. We spend around two hours here, walking at your pace, discovering plants that have fed, healed, and inspired Colombian communities for centuries. Note that the garden is open Tuesday to Sunday — we will confirm your visit when you book.

Humedal El Salitre — The Wild Heart of the City

A short drive brings us to one of Bogotá's most important urban wetlands — an ancient ecosystem that has somehow survived the city growing up around it. The wetland is home to dozens of resident and migratory bird species, and the contrast between the wildlife on the water and the apartment buildings on the horizon is one of those only-in-Bogotá moments that stays with you. We walk the flat, well-maintained paths, watch the birds, and make a donation to the Bogotá Wetland Network — because ecosystems this fragile deserve more than just admiration.

Parque Simón Bolívar — Where Bogotá Breathes

Bogotá's largest urban park is where the city comes to exhale. Joggers, cyclists, families, musicians — on any given day, the park is a cross-section of the city at its most relaxed. We take an hour to walk, sit, and absorb a version of Bogotá that most tourists never see.

Ecobarrio La Esmeralda — The Bogotá That Lives Differently

Our final stop is not a landmark or a museum. It is a neighborhood — a traditional, middle-class Bogotá barrio that has quietly become one of the city's most sustainable communities. Community gardens, recycling initiatives, local murals, and the unhurried rhythm of everyday Colombian life. There is a donation box at the community center — whatever you choose to contribute goes directly to the neighborhood's environmental projects. This is the Bogotá that doesn't make it into the guidebooks, and that is exactly why it is worth visiting.

End of Tour

We drive you back to your hotel or downtown drop-off point. You leave with a version of Bogotá in your head that most visitors never find.

Frequently asked questions

How many people can join the tour?

This experience accommodates a maximum of 4 guests due to private vehicle capacity. It is always exclusively your group — no shared tours, no strangers.

How far in advance do I need to book?

We recommend booking at least 24 hours in advance. That said, we do our best to accommodate last-minute requests depending on availability — if you are in Bogotá and want to join tomorrow, reach out and we will try to make it work.

What happens if it rains?

The Botanical Garden has covered sections and the vehicle provides shelter between stops. The wetland is actually beautiful in light rain — the birds don't mind, and neither do most of our guests. A light rain jacket and small umbrella are always a good idea in Bogotá regardless of the forecast.

How physically demanding is the tour?

Very low intensity. All walking takes place on flat, well-maintained paths. We move at your group's pace with plenty of natural stopping points. This tour is suitable for children, elderly travelers, and anyone who wants a relaxed day in nature.

Is La Candelaria safe?

Yes. La Candelaria is safe during the day, especially when you are with a guide and in a group. Like any historic city center, it is best explored with awareness — but daytime visits are completely normal and enjoyable for thousands of tourists every week. Your guide knows the neighborhood well and will always keep your comfort and safety in mind.

How do I pay?

You can pay your guide directly in cash at the end of the tour. We also carry a card reader if you prefer to pay by credit or debit card. If you would like to pay in advance, we can send you a secure payment link — just ask when you book.

Can I customize the tour in advance or on the day?

Absolutely — and we encourage it. When you book, someone from our team will reach out to learn about your group, your interests, and any preferences you have. Nothing is set in stone. You can also make changes on the day itself: your guide is there to make sure you have the best possible experience, not to follow a rigid script.

Can you pick me up at my hotel?

Yes. the tour includes Hotel pick up in a private vehicle
