Most people visit the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá to see a mine; we go to tell a story. Most people visit Lake Guatavita to see a view; we go to find a myth. Gold, Salt & Stone is a high-narrative, full-day immersion into the elements that shaped the Colombian Andes—from the deep-earth engineering of the Muisca people to the golden obsession of the Spanish Crown.

This is a private, 12-hour journey designed for those who want to understand the "why" behind the landmarks. We don’t use generic audio guides and we don’t leave you at the entrance. Your guide is with you 180 meters underground and on the rim of the sacred lake, connecting the dots between indigenous cosmogony and colonial history. It is a long day, an epic drive, and the only way to see these sites without feeling like part of a herd.

Highlights

  • The Cathedral from Within: A private walk through the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá. Your guide leads you through the tunnels, focusing on the transition from a functional salt mine to an architectural masterpiece.
  • Birthplace of El Dorado: A guided hike to the rim of Laguna de Guatavita. We explore the high-altitude ecosystem while tracing the history of the ritual that convinced the world the mountains were filled with gold.

Hotel Pick Up

We collect you at your hotel. We start early for a reason: Bogotá’s traffic is legendary, and beating the morning rush is the only way to ensure a relaxed day.

The Drive to Zipaquira

Leaving the city behind, we head north into the savanna. Depending on the traffic, this drive takes between 90 to 120 minutes. It’s the perfect time for your guide to set the stage, moving from the urban sprawl into the territory once ruled by the Muisca.

The Salt Mine: Deep Earth Exploration

We arrive at the Salt Cathedral. We head 180 meters underground to explore the tunnels and the main nave. Unlike tours that leave you with an audio guide, we walk with you, connecting the history of the salt trade with the engineering feat of the cathedral itself.

Zipaquirá Main Square: Coffee & Stone

After emerging from the mine, we take a panoramic drive through the town to the main square. This is a stop for the "Bogotá To-Do" pace—time for a premium coffee, a local snack, and selfies against the backdrop of some of the finest colonial stone architecture in the country.

Local Lunch

We break for a meal based on your preferences. Whether you want a traditional wood-fired grill or a lighter local bite, your guide will point you to the best spots in Zipaquirá.

The Route to the Sacred Lake

We leave Zipaquirá for a scenic drive of at least one hour through the Andean countryside toward the Guatavita Reserve. The landscape shifts as we climb higher into the mountains.

Guatavita Lake: The Legend of El Dorado

We hike the trail to the rim of the sacred lagoon. This is the heart of the experience—a guided exploration of the Muisca rituals, the history of the "Golden Man," and the many (often disastrous) attempts to drain the lake for its treasures.

The Ride Back to Bogotá

We begin the final leg of the journey. We’ll drop you back at your prefered place, giving you time to decompress after 12 hours of salt, stone, and gold. Depending on the evening traffic, expect to be back by 6 - 7 PM.

Frequently asked questions

How many people can join the tour?

This experience accommodates a maximum of 4 guests due to private vehicle capacity. It is always exclusively your group — no shared tours, no strangers.

How far in advance do I need to book?

We recommend booking at least 24 hours in advance. That said, we do our best to accommodate last-minute requests depending on availability — if you are in Bogotá and want to join tomorrow, reach out and we will try to make it work.

Is all the food really included?

Yes — everything described in the itinerary is covered by the tour price. The fruit tasting, lechona, tamal, street food in La Candelaria, the coffee tasting, and the ajiaco. You will not need to pay for anything along the way. If you want to purchase additional items at the market or try something extra, that is entirely at your own cost.

What if I have dietary restrictions or allergies?

Let us know when you book and we will do our best to adapt. Most of the foods on this tour are naturally gluten-free, and vegetarian alternatives exist for several stops. Severe allergies should be communicated in advance so we can plan accordingly.

How physically demanding is the tour?

Very low intensity. The market and street food sections involve some walking on flat surfaces, but the pace is relaxed and there are natural breaks throughout — including the coffee pause midway. Suitable for all ages and fitness levels.

How do I pay?

You can pay your guide directly in cash at the end of the tour. We also carry a card reader if you prefer to pay by credit or debit card. If you would like to pay in advance, we can send you a secure payment link — just ask when you book.

Can I customize the tour in advance or on the day?

Absolutely. If there is a specific dish you want to try or a market you have heard about, tell us when you book and we will see what we can incorporate. Your guide is there to give you the best possible experience, not to follow a rigid script.

Can you pick me up at my hotel?
